27 Aug Two Years In The Making
I Never Thought It Would Be Easy, But It Is Rewarding.
Two years ago it started: Blue Helium Concepts, a hyper-local advertising, social media and web design firm specializing in assisting independent businesses was created. Like all other businesses, we started from the ground up as a simple idea that grew into a few clients, then several referrals and then a steady stream of work.
I never thought that it was going to be easy. I was still working a full-time job when I started the business. There were countless sleepless nights when I just thought, “Why am I leaving a steady job with healthcare to start my own business with no support system?” I still found the crazy inside me to do it. I found the drive to create something with my name on it, something that I could stand behind.
Two years later and we are still chuggin’ along. Trust me when I say there have been many ups and downs (and bottles of wine) along the way but it’s a journey that I wouldn’t trade for any full-time job anywhere…well maybe except a vineyard, and even then I don’t think I would last long before drinking the product.
Here’s the thing: it’s not easy, glorious or rewarding all the time and I’m pretty sure that all of our clients, vendors and small shops out there would agree. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into building a business and brand that can sustain itself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s what I like to call “challengingly rewarding” at times. When I say that, I mean there were and still are nights that I am up until 2 or 3 in the morning working on projects, writing articles or simply brainstorming; it’s the days when you have a review or a referral come in from a happy client that make it all worth it.
To me, anyone that thinks it’s going to be easy is just fooling themselves. The idea of owning your own business, making your own schedule and making all the money you want (and need) is really just a pipe dream, kinda. It takes years to get to that point and even then, there’s no guarantee that you will get to make their own schedule or come and go as they please.
We’ve seen many changes in two years including parting ways with long term clients who had become friends, creating new bonds with friends who have turned into clients, taking on a business partner (which I never thought I’d do) and building several successful brands from scratch. We can’t wait to see what the next two years and all the years after that hold for Blue Helium Concepts!
